About TRAILAR

TRAILAR is an innovative startup with offices in Manchester and Rugby in the UK. We originate from an idea seeded in a startup lab programme run by international logistics company Deutsche Post DHL.

The idea is simple – install solar panels on the top of vehicles to reduce carbon emissions and save fuel. The timing of our entry into the market is ideal, with the technology having reached maturity and customers eager to make economic and environmental savings on their vehicle fleets.

Following our initial Proof of Concept work, the founders achieved significant funding from DHL and became incorporated as an independent business in September 2018. Ramp-up activity started in early 2019, with product launch into the global marketplace in July 2019. In the first twelve months we grew from the founding Directors to a team of 30.

Growth is set to accelerate within the next 18 months as we scale to deliver the product within new and emerging territories and industries. To fuel the development of a world class software product TRAILAR is seeking talented, enthusiastic, and capable people to take the organisation to the next level of growth. In return we can guarantee interesting projects, lots of opportunity and a vibrant, fast paced, human-centric team environment.

Job Description

Our Cloud Platform is at the centre of our product offering, gathering data from on-board telematics devices and enabling customers to understand their fleet’s solar energy usage in addition to insights into the usage and health of their vehicles.

We have ambitious plans to extend the platform, providing our customers with unique and class-leading insights into their vehicle’s health, green energy usage, operational activity, and maintenance requirements. To facilitate this, we are expanding our world class in-house Software and Data Engineering team.

As a Data Engineer, you will play a key part in a small team, working to build new tools, infrastructure, reports, and frameworks to improve and expand the insights our customers can gain from the data harvested by the TRAILAR solution.

You will have a Software Engineering background, but your focus and interest will be on data – building, maintaining, and enhancing how we deliver our data as meaningful information to customers.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Contributing to our data ingest, transform and warehousing architecture – you will be intimately familiar with data warehousing, known for your SQL prowess and a dab hand at one or more programming languages (Java, JavaScript, Typescript would be great but not mandatory)

  • Building engaging, customer-orientated reports – experience with BI tools is a must (we use Amazon Quicksight and Tableau) and a thirst for creating great looking data insights. You’ll be comfortable working in a fast-paced environment, delivering value quickly and iteratively.

  • Improving the way in which we use data across the business – strong data analysis is at the core of great decision making. You will play a key part in influencing how data and the associated tooling is used across the organisation.

This is a fully hands-on role and reports to the Head of Software Engineering.

Requirements

We need you to have…

  • Some exposure to Cloud platform services – preferably AWS or Azure

  • Familiarity with BI Tools – Tableau as a minimum

  • Experience in a modern programming language, comfortable spending time in code when appropriate

  • A high level of competency in databases (SQL) and data warehousing, and understand the part these play in good data architecture

  • A desire to work in a fast-paced, chaotic, unpredictable, risk-taking, exciting environment

  • A high level of comfort with rapid change – as a small business we try new ideas, fail fast, and change tack often

It would be great if you also had…

  • Experience of working within an AWS PaaS environment in an industrial setting

  • Experience in one or more of Javascript, Typescript, Java

  • Significant experience using the Snowflake data platform

  • Previously worked in a customer-centric role designing reports and data analyses

  • Previously worked with vehicle telemetry and vehicle-based analytics

  • Used a variety of AWS PaaS services including Lambda functions, databases, messaging queues
